Sometimes there is so much going on that it is hard to decide what to write about. It is sort of like a kid walking into an amusement park and not knowing what to do first. The GOP provides so much material that it is hard to focus on just one. So the trick is to try to find the thread that seems to flow from one to the other and on and on. Should we discuss Darrell Issa’s attempt to implicate the White House in the IRS mess, or should we discuss his endless effort to find a scandal in the tragedy in Benghazi? Should we discuss Senator Ted Cruz’s efforts to demagogue the immigration bill, the gun control bill or the budget? Should we discuss the interesting reactions that cross party lines regarding the NSA programs or should we discuss the never ending appetite of the hawks in congress to get us into another war? I won’t even offer up the latest idiotic comments made by Republican men and women both regarding rape and abortion. They make it so easy to take a cheap shot. But there is a common thread that runs through them all.
There is an assumption that the electorate is uninformed, ignorant and uneducated. Quite frankly, the right wing media work tirelessly to fulfill that assumption. The number of outright lies and half truths that are told on FOX and come out of the snarling and angry mouths of such wise men as Rush Limbaugh , Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck is astounding. Combine that with a population that is uneducated, looking for excuses for their misfortune and listens to a narrow range of news and news commentary and you have incredibly fertile ground for a demagogue. If that sounds like a harsh description of the GOP faithful, just look at who they send to congress and who wins in the primaries. They are primed to distrust and dislike government. They are told that the government wants to take away their guns and that their is a government war on Christmas. They are told that the government wants to corrupt the educational system with “science” and remove control from local authorities. They are told that government wants to give everything away to the poor and starve the middle class while it sinks the country into deeper and deeper debt. They are told that they have to stand up for their Constitutional rights, or big government will take them away. It’s the same old story. If the population believes that their “way of life” is threatened by big government, they will support those who tell them they are fighting to protect it.
Every demagogue throughout history has played this game. In the end we all lose. The only winners are those who see as their ultimate goal their selfish grab for power, and let the country be damned. Until the country damns the likes of Cruz and Issa and the many more who mouth nonsense to meet their own goals, the country will be damned.
It is an unfortunate reality that the common threads that binds the fabric of the GOP is negativism, dishonesty, lack of new ideas or solutions, and fear. We need leadership in the GOP to reinvigorate the two-party system and end the dysfunction in Washington. I dare the GOP faithful to support such a person.
